§ 46-379. Liability insurance.

  • (a)

    Each applicant for a vehicle for hire business license shall, before the license is granted, provide evidence of a policy or certificate of motor vehicle liability insurance, with respect to each vehicle to be operated as a vehicle for hire, with coverage in the following amounts:

    (1)

    Ten thousand dollars for injury to one person;

    (2)

    Twenty-five thousand dollars for injury to more than one person in any one accident; and

    (3)

    Five thousand dollars for property loss or damage.

    (b)

    Such insurance shall be issued by a company authorized to do business in the state. The policy or certificate of insurance shall identify all vehicles insured under such policy and shall contain a provision obligating the insurance carrier to provide notice of cancellation or modification of the policy to the chief of police within 15 calendar days after such a cancellation or modification. In the event of lapse, cancellation, or termination of such policy or certificate of insurance, or in the event that such coverage as required above are no longer afforded under such policy or certificate of insurance, then the license for the vehicle for hire business shall be deemed to have immediately expired.

    (c)

    In lieu of such liability insurance requirement, the licensee shall be authorized to operate as a "self-insurer" if such operation is otherwise authorized under O.C.G.A. § 33-34-5.1.
